LOSEC® Patient information leaflet
Please read this leaflet carefully before you take your medicine. If you have any question or are unsure about anything to do with your medicine, Please ask your doctor or pharmacist. Remember this medicine is only for you. Only a doctor can prescribe it. Never give it to anyone else even if their symptoms are similar to yours. COMPOSITION Each capsule contains the active ingredient omeprazole 20 mg . PROPERTIES Losec is a proton pump inhibitor. It reduces the production of acid in your stomach. INDICATIONS Losec Capsules are used for treating the following conditions: - Reflux oesophagitis and oesophageal reflux disease. - Dyspepsia which causes stomach pain and discomfort. - Duodenal ulcer or gastric ulcer. If you have previously had trouble with an ulcer and need to continue taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), LOSEC either prevents an ulcer developing or heals one that is already there. - If you are taking NSAIDs Losec protects your stomach or duodenum whilst you are taking them. - Ulcers which are infected with bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. - Prevention of damage to the lungs caused by breathing in stomach fluids (acid aspiration), for instance, before an operation. - Excess of acid in the stomach caused by a growth in the pancreas (Zollinger- Ellison syndrome). PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS Do not take Losec Capsules if you are allergic to Omeprazol. Do not take Losec Capsules if you are taking atazanavir (a medicine used to treat HIV). Tell your doctor about any other medicines that you are taking including those you have bought without a prescription. Discuss with your doctor before taking the medicine if: - You are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, considering becoming pregnant or breast-feeding. - You are taking any of the following medicines: Diazepam , phenytion , warfarin or other Vitamin K blockers, digoxin , ketoconazole, itraconazole or voriconazole or tacrolimus. - You have liver problems. - You have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars. ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE Losec Capsules can be taken by adults and children (1year and older) at any time of the day with food or on an empty stomach. Your doctor will tell you how many capsules to take, and when to take them. The dosages below are those usually recommended. The capsules should be swallowed whole, with a drink of water. If you or your child have trouble swallowing the capsules, you can open the capsules and take the contents directly with half a glass of water or you can gently mix the contents into /2/ teaspoons of non-fizzy water, any acidic fruit juice (e.g. apple, orange or pineapple) or yoghurt. Do not drink the mixture if you have left it for more than 30 minutes. Remember to stir the mixture before drinking and rinse it all down with a half a glass of water. You can also suck your capsules and then rinse it all down with half a glass of water. -Treatment for heartburn (reflux oesophagitis and oesophageal reflux disease): For adults, the usual dose is Losec 20mg once a day for 4 weeks. Your doctor may tell you to continue taking the capsules or increase the dose depending on how you respond to treatment. To stop your symptoms returning, your doctor may tell you to continue taking your medidicine. For children, the dose of Losec given will be dependent on their weight and treatment should be given for 4 to 12 weeks. -Relief of acid indigestion which causes stomach pain or discomfort (dyspepsia): The usual dose is 20mg once daily for 2 to 4 weeks. Your doctor will tell you how long to take your capsules for. If you experience no improvement in the symptoms you are suffering from, you should return to your doctor. -Treatment for gastric and duodenal ulcer: The usual dose is 20mg once a day for 4 to 8 weeks. The dose may need to be increased depending on how you respond to treatment. -Treatment and prevention of stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers and associated symptoms caused by NSAIDs If you have had trouble with an ulcer in the past and need to continue taking a NSAIDs, the only recommended dose is 20mg once a day. -Treatment for ulcers caused by infection with bacteria called Helicobacter pylori The usual dose is 40mg once daily or 20mg twice a day. Your doctor will also tell you to take one or two of the following antibiotics: Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin, Metronidazole (or Tinidazole). The usual treatment time is one or two weeks. -Before a hospital operation when you are to be given a general anaesthetic The usual dose is 40mg the evening before surgery, and then another 40mg two to six hours before surgery.
-Treatment for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: The normal starting dose is 60mg once a day. If the dose is more than 80mg a day, half the dose should be taken in the morning and half at night. Your doctor will tell you how many capsules to take and when to take them. OVERDOSE If you take more than the recommended number of capsules, contact your doctor straight away. IF YOU FORGET TO TAKE A DOSE: If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose, just take the next dose on time. SIDE EFFECTS : Like all medicines. Losec Capsules may sometimes cause side effects, as well as the effects that are needed. These are usually mild and go away when you stop taking this medicine. Common side effects: Headache, diarrhea, constipation, stomachache, feeling sick, vomiting, wind. Uncommon side effects: Dizziness; pins and needles; light-headedness; feeling faint; sleepiness; trouble sleeping; liver disease which may make your skin and eyes yellow; rash; itching; dermatitis; generally feeling unwell. If you experience any unusual side effects call your doctor. STORING YOUR MEDICINE: - Do not take your capsules after the expiry date shown on the carton. - Keep medicine out of the reach and sight of children. - Keep this medicine in the container in which it is dispensed for you. - Do not store above 25oC.
