Composition
Each tablet contains: 10 mg or 40 mg Propranolol HCl.
Properties
Propranolol is one of the group beta-blockers. It has effects on the heart and circulation and also other parts of the body.
Indications
“Inderal” can be used for many conditions including hypertension (high blood pressures), angina (chest pain), some arrhythmia’s (disorders of heart rhythm), protection of the heart after a myocardial infarction (heart attack), prevention of migraine, essential tremor, anxiety, certain thyroid conditions (such as thyrotoxicosis which is caused by overactive thyroid gland), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle), phaeochromocytoma (high blood pressure due to tumour usually near the kidney) and bleeding in the eoesophagus caused by high blood pressure in the liver.
Contraindications
“Inderal” is contraindicated to you :
- If you have ever had asthma or wheezing do not take your “Inderal” .Go back to your doctor or pharmacist.
- If you have previously had an allergic reaction to it, or to propranolol or to any of the other ingredients listed above.
- If you have heart failure which is not under control or people with certain other conditions such as heart block, very slow or very irregular heart beats, very low blood pressure or very poor circulation. It should also not be taken by people who have been fasting for a long time, people who have phaeochromocytoma, which has not being treated or by people who have metabolic acidosis or a particular type of chest pain called Prinzmetal’s angina. Your doctor will know about these conditions, make sure he knows before you take “Inderal”.
Precautions
Tell your doctor before you start taking “Inderal” if any of the following apply to you: - You have allergic reactions to such things as insect stings. - You have diabetes. “Inderal” may change your normal response to low blood sugar, which usually involves an increase in heart rate. - You have thyrotoxicosis, because “Inderal” may hide symptoms. - You have kidney or liver problems (including cirrhosis of the liver), you may need to have some check ups during your treatment. - You have other health problems such as circulation disorders, heart problems, breathlessness or swollen ankles. - You are pregnant or breast feeding.
Your medicine is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or to use machinery. But some people may occasionally feel dizzy or tired when taking “Inderal”. If this happens to you, ask your doctor for advice.
Drug interactions
If you are taking any medicine tell your doctor. “Inderal” can interfere with the action of some other drugs and some other drugs can have an effect on your medicine. The medicines which can cause some problems when taken together with “Inderal” are: verapamil,diltiazem, nifedipine,nisoldipine, nicardipine, isradipine, lacidipine (which are used to treat hypertension or angina), disopyramide,lignocaine, quinidine, or propafenone (for irregular heart beats), digoxin (for heart failure), adrenaline (a heart stimulant), ibuprofen and indomethacin (for pain and inflammation), ergotamine and dihydroergotamine (for migraine), chlorpromazine and thioridizine (for certain psychiatric disorders), cimetidine (for stomach problems), rifampicine (for the treatment of tuberculosis), theophylline (for asthma), warfarin (to thin the blood) and hydralazine (for hypertension). If you drink a lot of alcohol, this may reduce the effect of your medicine. If you are taking a drug called clonidine (for hypertension or migraine) and “Inderal” together, you must not stop taking clonidine unless your doctor tells you to do so. If it becomes necessary for you to stop taking clonidine, your doctor will give you careful instructions on how to do it. If you go into a hospital to have an operation, tell the anaesthetic and the medical staff that you are taking “Inderal”.
Administration and Dosage
“Inderal” tablets should be swallowed. Your doctor will have decided how many tablets you need to take each day depending on your condition. Follow your doctor’s instructions about when and how to take your tablets. Please read the label on the container.
Usual daily doses for adults:
Hypertension (high blood pressure) 160 mg to 320 mg.
Angina (chest pain) 120 mg to 240 mg.
Arrhythmia’s (disorder of heart rhythm)*30 mg to 160 mg.
Protection of the heart after a heart attack 160 mg.
Prevention of migraine* 80 mg to 160 mg.
Essential tremor 80 mg to 160 mg.
Anxiety 40 mg to 120 mg.
Certain thyroid conditions (such as thyroxicosis) * 30 mg to 160 mg.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle) 30 mg to 160 mg.
Phaeochromocytoma* 30 mg to 60 mg.
Bleeding in the oesophagus caused by high blood pressure in the liver 80 mg to 160 mg.
*Under some circumstances, “Inderal” can be used to treat children with these conditions. The dosage will be adjusted by the doctor according to the child’s age or weight. If you forgot to take your medicine, take your dose when you remember and then take your next dose at the usual time. Don’t take two doses at the same time. If you are worry, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Do not stop taking your tablets without talking to your doctor first. In some cases, it may be necessary to stop taking the medicine gradually.
Side Effects
As with all medicines, undesirable events can sometimes be experienced with ”Inderal”. Occasionally, a few people can suffer from the following:
Cold hands and feet, tiredness, slow heart beat, nausea, diarrhea and disturbed sleep, thinning of the hair, mood changes, confusion, psychoses or hallucinations, bruising more easily or purplish marks on the skin, tingling of the hands, dry eyes, disturbances of vision, muscle weakness, skin rashes, worsening of psoriasis or dizziness particularly when you stand up, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in children who do not have diabetes. Other possible events which may occur in susceptible people are numbness and spasm in the fingers (Raynauld’s phenomenon), heart block (which can cause dizziness or fainting), worsening of heart failure (breathlessness and/or swollen ankle) in people with heart failure, worsening of breathing difficulties in people with asthma or breathing problems, worsening of the circulation in people with poor circulation. “Inderal “ tablets contain a small amount of glycerol. When glycerol is given in high doses it can cause headache, stomach upset and diarrhoae. Don’t be alarmed by this list of possible side effects. You may not have any of them. If you get any other undesirable events or if you think your medicine is causing any problems, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Warning
Don’t use your medicine after the expiry date on the container. Keep your medicine in a safe place, where children cannot see or reach it, it could harm them. Keep your medicine below 25o C and away from strong light and dampness. If your doctor decides to stop treatment return any left - over tablets to your pharmacist. Only keep them if the doctor tells you to.
Overdosage
If you accidentally take an overdose of your medicine, either call your doctor straight away, or go to your nearest hospital casualty department. Always take any remaining tablets and the container with you, so that the medicine can be identified.
Remember
This medicine is for you. Only a doctor can prescribe it for you. Never give it to some one else. It may harm them even if their symptoms are the same as yours.
