Properties
ESIDREX increases the excretion of NaCl and water, consequently an excessively strict low-salt diet should be avoided. It also lowers elevated blood pressure, the latter effect is potentiated when ESIDREX is used in combination with other antihypertensives.

Indications
- Hypertension , alone or in combination with other hypertensives
- Oedema due to : a) Congestive heart failure of mild or moderate degree. b) Ascites due to cirrhosis of the liver in stable patients under close control.
- Renal diabetes insipidus
- Idiopathic Hypercalciuria, (to prevent recurrences of calcic concrement formation)

Dosage
It depends on the clinical picture and the patient’s response. When given in a single daily dose it should preferably be taken in the morning with breakfast.
Hypertension : Initially : 1-2 tablets daily. ½-1 tablet for long-term treatment, if inadequate, then combined treatment with other antihypertensives is recommended.
Oedema : Adults : 1-3 tablets daily given in 1-2 doses. For maintenance therapy: 1 tablet daily or every other day. Children: up to 2 mg/kg daily, depending on the clinical picture.
Renal diabetes insipidus: 4 tablets daily given in 2-4 doses
Hypercalciuria : 1-2 tablets twice daily .

Side Effects
- ESIDREX is generally well tolerated, even when taken over a long time. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur: skin rash, gastro-intestinal disturbances, unusual tiredness or weakness, or symptoms such as: severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea.
- Other side effects may occur that usually go away during treatment. However check with your doctor, if any of the following less common side effects persists or are bothersome:
dizziness or light headness (more likely to occur in the elderly), increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight, loss of appetite and upset stomach and decreased sexual ability.
- If you notice any other effects not listed above, check with your doctor.
- Patients taking this medicine should not take any other medicines unless this had been discussed with the doctor.

Contraindications
Anuria, severe renal and hepatic failure, hypersensitivity to the drug.

Precautions
In oedema due to nephritic syndrome, ESIDREX, should be used only under close control in normokalaemic patients with no signs of volume depletion or severe hypoalbuminaemia. If additional loss of potassium occurs (vomiting, diarrhea, nephrosis, liver cirrhosis…) potassium medication will need to be given under surveillance.

Pregnancy and lactation
During lactation and the first trimester of pregnancy, ESIDREX, should only be employed for compelling reasons.

Packing and compostion
A pack of 20 tablets, each contains: Hydrochlorthiazide 25 mg .
