NOVARTIS
LOCASALEN
Scientific Name:
Fulmethasone, salicylic acid

Composition
contains 0.02% flumethasone pivalate and 3% salicylic acid in a fatty ointment base.

Properties
The therapeutic effects exerted by LOCASALEN are attributed to the properties of the active substances incorporated in it
i.e. the difluorinated corticoid flumethasone pivalate and salicylic acid as well as to its specially formulated fatty ointment base composed of petroleum jelly and lanoline.
Thanks to its corticoid component, LOCASALEN, displays pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antipruritic activity.
The salicylic acid component accounts for the squamolytic, keratolytic, antiparakeratolytic, and antiseptic properties which the preparation also possesses.
The ointment base helps to promote healing by exerting an emollient effect and increasing the oil content of the skin, while at the same time it enforces the action of the corticoid in depth. These complementary effects prove of particular value in chronic skin diseases.

Indications
LOCASALEN is intended for the treatment of subacute to hyperchronic, inflammatory and/or dysplastic skin diseases, as well as hyperkeratotic conditions in particular. Its indications thus include: Chronic exogenous eczema irrespective of origin (e.g. skin disorders due to attrition. Occupational eczema), tylotic eczema, neurodermatitis, (chronic constitutional eczema). And lichen simplex chronicus. Psoriasis. Lichen planus, chronic lupus erythematosus. Pustulosis of the palms and soles, chronic dyshidrosis, ichthyosis, and other forms of hyperkeratosis

Contra-indications
Tuberculosis of the skin, syphilitic skin infections, and fresh virus infections of the skin. Vaccination reactions, known hypersensitivity to flumethasone pivalate or other corticosteroids, as well as to salicylic acid.

Application and dosage
LOCASALEN should as a general rule be applied once or twice daily. Since LOCASALEN does not soil clothes or bed-linen, there is usually no need to cover the treated area; in certain indications, however; it may be advisable to employ an occlusive dressing.

Precautions
LOCASALEN is not indicated in acute weeping or subacute exudative stage or in patients hypersensitive to ointments. LOCASALEN must not be allowed to come into contact with the conjunctiva. In pregnant women and patients with marked renal insufficiency, repeated application to extensive areas of skin should be avoided, because transcutaneous absorption of the salicylic acid component might possibly give rise to systemic effects.

Storage instructions
Protect from heat.
